钢化玻璃其实是一种预应力玻璃，为提高玻璃的强度，通常使用化学或物理的方法，在玻璃表面形成压应力，玻璃承受外力时首先抵消表层应力，从而提高了承载能力，增强玻璃自身抗风压性，寒暑性，冲击性等。

在室内装修中大量使用饰面玻璃，通常采用平板玻璃、釉面玻璃、镜面玻璃、夹丝玻璃、钢化玻璃等，尤其在公共建筑中使用较多。例如将玻璃通过边框、压条与装饰木基层固定，有采用玻璃胶直接将玻璃粘接在瓷砖装饰基层上的，有采用金属钉或压条将玻璃固定在装饰木基层上的。对固定在装饰基层上的建筑装饰玻璃称为饰面玻璃。
